At the concert of the Baltic Orchestras Festival in Vilnius, the world-famous conductor from Finland, Tarmos Peltokoski, and the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra will perform a program specially prepared for the start of their new concert season. The first part of the concert will feature "Tango" by the internationally acclaimed Latvian composer Artur Maskats (b. 1957) and one of the most famous works of the British composer Gustav Holst (1874-1934) – the orchestral suite "Planets". The suite consists of seven parts named after the planets of the Solar System: “Mars”, “Venus”, “Mercury”, “Jupiter”, “Saturn”, “Uranus” and “Neptune”. Each of these parts reflects the astrological character of the planet that influences the human experience on earth.
In the second part of the concert, the audience will be able to hear the impressive "Antarctic Symphony" by the British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). in 1948 R. Vaughan Williams was invited to create the soundtrack for a film about the famous British polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott, who tragically died with his companions on the way back from his second expedition to Antarctica, just 20 km from the nearest food depot. The composer was so deeply moved by the story that he wrote most of the soundtrack without even seeing the film's script. Eventually, R. Vaughan Williams realized that this could be the basis for a new symphony, and over the next few years he completed his seventh symphony, which he named the “Antarctic Symphony”.
The impressive program at the concert of the Baltic Orchestra Festival will be conducted by the artistic director and chief conductor of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra Tarmo Peltokoski. In 2022 T. Peltokoski was awarded the title of Principal Guest Conductor at Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the first such title of conductor in the orchestra's 42-year history. T. Peltokoski is also Principal Guest Conductor at the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director at the Toulouse National Symphony Orchestra. “T. Peltokoski has not only phenomenal technique, but also energy, musical instinct, clear expression, fiery dynamics – all that leaves the listener speechless”, – wrote Rémy Louis in the prestigious music magazine “Diapazon Magazine”. And all this – when the conductor is barely 24 years old...
